AP- Fifteen athletes braved the weather on June 7th to come out and play baseball, and despite the terrible conditions, managed to get in a game of softball.

Playing on the outfield grass facing the infield, two unnamed teams squared off in a hard-fought contest. Home Team beat Away Team, 5-4, the decisive run being scored in the bottom of the 7th inning on a controversial play.

Unlike most contests, this was a well-played, low scoring affair. Both teams jumped out and scored two runs in the first inning, and home team had a brief lead in the bottom of the second when it scored two more runs. Kevin and Christos both scored twice in the opening two frames, but Home Team could not hold the lead.

A few defensive miscues and timely hitting allowed Away Team to knot the score at 4-4, where it would remain for a long time. Teams traded zeroes until the 7th inning, when Kevin reached first on an infield single. Christos followed with a grounder to second, which was bobbled by Mike D, but then fielded by Larry for the 4-3 putout. Kevin advanced to second on the play, and with runs not coming easily, he tried for third. The ensuing throw was wild and Kevin was able to score as the ball glanced off Joe’s glove and into the outfield.

Scott lodged a protest after the play, claiming that an earlier incident where a poorly thrown ball went into the puddle on the infield grass was precedent to keep Kevin on third. In that instance, runners were only allowed to advance one base. Scott’s protest, however, wasn’t accepted, and the run was allowed.

On the ensuing play, Brian hit a pop up between Mike D and Jose, which was allowed to drop for a two-out single, which would have scored Kevin anyway. Away Team wasn’t able to muster any offense in the last few innings, and Home Team took the narrow win.


NOTES: The weather was a huge factor in this game, and both teams had trouble with traction around home plate and on the base paths – a number of batters slipped out of the batters box. ** There was not an extra-base hit by either team. ** Christos led all players in putouts by a large margin, and conditions led to Scott making a rare couple of errors, though he had a 6-3 DP. ** The double play turned Plakas-Mangan-Jackson officially noted as the slowest double play in the history of baseball ** There was near tragedy in one of the later innings as Benny carried the bat down the first base line after a squibber and collided with Cohen.
