AP – In one of the most memorable games in league history, two unlikely candidates shut down the offense until the late innings and the same old face was there to deliver a clutch hit for his team at the end. Kevin Chau and Brian Mangan both turned in sterling starts for their respective squads, but Scott Schiffman hit a game-tying grand slam in the ninth as team T-Mac completed a dramatic comeback over team Sinead to win 11-10 on Saturday.
The winning run was scored in anti-climactic fashion as Mark Rubin, coming on in relief of Chau, surrendered it on a one-out HBP to young Andrew Damato. The 15-year old leftfielder, coming to the league for only the second time, absorbed the bases-loaded blow to plate Mangan with the winning run.
It was a fitting end to a game that was unusual to say the least. Chau - a seldom used pitcher whose raw physical tools had never really coalesced into positive performance on the mound, and Mangan – a soft-thrower who had always seen sporadic success in relief – dueled for seven plus innings.
Two weeks after Chris Plakas teased us with history, Mangan took it a step further, holding a no-hitter into an unprecedented fifth inning. He allowed only three base-runners (via two walks and an error) before an infield single by Alvin Law broke it up. There was another break in that inning as well, but one that had an even more pronounced impact on the game. Two batters later, Mangan jammed Ben Nadado to break the last wooden bat, forcing the league to go back to aluminum.
Up until that point, Chau was cruising as well. Between him and Mangan, they retired 19 of 21 batters, striking out eight.
